PM Modi assures full assistance to flood-affected Arunachal & Nagaland

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today met with the Members of Parliament from Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland at Parliament House. In a social media post, Mr Modi said that the discussions focused on the prevailing flood situation in both the states. The Prime Minister said that the central government will keep working with the respective state governments to address the challenges. He also prayed for everyone’s wellbeing and safety.

In a social media post, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said that during the meeting, the Prime Minister assured them full assistance and provided them with necessary directions for ensuring timely relief, restoration and support for the affected people.

Author Salman Rushdie’s attacker convicted of terrorism in US federal court

A jury found Hadi Matar guilty of all the charges against him, including engaging in an act of transnational terrorism. Matar, 28, is already serving a 25-year New York state prison sentence following his conviction for attempted murder in the August 2022 attack on an amphitheatre stage. The federal conviction carries a potential life sentence.

ED conducts searches at 16 locations in connection with 2022 Coimbatore bomb blast

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has conducted searches at sixteen locations in Chennai, Coimbatore, Hyderabad and Mumbai in connection with a money laundering investigation linked to the alleged terror funding of the 2022 Coimbatore bomb blast. The agency said, the investigation revealed that the attack was carried out by Jamesha Mubeen, a suicide bomber, along with others as an ISIS-inspired terrorist attack. According to the ED, a modified Maruti car loaded with explosive substances was used in the blast.

The ED alleged that the accused raised funds for their terror activities through two major methods. One of these was a fake COVID-19 vaccination certificate racket operated during the pandemic, in which money was collected from individuals seeking fraudulent vaccination certificates without receiving the vaccine. Secondly through donations and fraudulent investments in Kovai Arabic College which was deeply involved in radicalisation of youths.

The agency said that the investigation was initiated based on various FIRs registered by the National Investigation Agency in connection with the suicide bomb explosion that took place near the Sangameshwarar Temple in Coimbatore in October 2022.

Benchmark domestic equity indices ended with modest gains today. The Sensex rose 274 points or 0.35 percent  to close at 77,928, while Nifty added 67 points or 0.3 percent to settle at 24,317.

In the broader market at the National Stock Exchange, the Midcap 100 index dropped over 0.3 per cent, while the Smallcap 100 index fell nearly 0.6 percent.
