In a major step towards strengthening India's energy security, the Union Cabinet has approved the National Offshore Exploration Scheme – Samudra Manthan with an outlay of ₹84,084 crore till 2030-31.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the scheme will accelerate offshore oil and gas exploration through deepwater and ultra-deepwater drilling, high-quality seismic surveys, scientific exploration in frontier basins, and development of offshore production infrastructure.
The government expects the initiative to add more than 600 Million Metric Tons of Oil Equivalent (MMTOE) to India's reserves, generate large-scale employment, strengthen Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat, and reduce dependence on imported energy.
The scheme is based on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of a modern-day 'Samudra Manthan' to unlock India's offshore energy potential and support the goal of Viksit Bharat.
