In a major push towards clean energy and sustainable infrastructure, the Union Cabinet has approved the Pradhan Mantri Surya Sarovar Yojana (PM-SSY) with a total outlay of ₹5,070 crore. The scheme aims to develop 5,000 MW of Floating Solar Photovoltaic (FSPV) projects with co-located Energy Storage Systems (ESS) over the next five years.
Addressing the media after the Cabinet meeting, Union Information & Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the projects will be developed on existing reservoirs, canals and industrial ponds, eliminating the need for additional land acquisition.
The scheme will include Energy Storage Systems with a minimum storage capacity of two hours, amounting to 10,000 MWh, ensuring reliable and uninterrupted renewable power generation.
The government said the initiative will make productive use of existing water bodies, increase renewable energy capacity, strengthen India's energy security, reduce carbon emissions and support the vision of Viksit Bharat through sustainable development.
